I am so excited to share with you all my recap of our LA/Hawaii trip! I wanted to really put a good amount of detail in this so I wanted to wait until we got all settled so I could focus and give this post the TLC it deserves. I hope you all enjoy it and if you have any questions at all about our travels or tips/places to go if you are visiting the same areas please feel free to reach out. Enjoy Crohnies xx. Matt and I love being able to escape real life for a few days here and there and by time this trip was here we definitely needed some R&R as well as some new adventures. My mom has a timeshare in Maui so we knew we would be visiting there almost a year before the actual trip. Being the crazy reality TV obsessed person I am I insisted to Matt that we stop in LA on the way to Maui so that we could go to SUR. Yup. I requested we visit a city just to go to a restaurant. Matt vetoed that idea unless we spent a few days hanging out and checking out the LA life. I was thrilled, found an Air B&B and the rest was history. I was definitely nervous for this vacation because our last vacation that we went on I got really sick a couple of days in and I wasn't really prepared. This time I did my due diligence, which you can read all about in my traveling with a chronic illness post. There were a few speed bumps but we had an amazing time! Instead of letting being sick stop me from traveling I use my travels as practice to get better and better at traveling with Crohn's. More of a reason to take more vacations right? PART 1: LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIAWe left on a Friday morning and got to LA midday which was the perfect time to grab lunch at In N Out Burger before we checked into our Air B&B. Neither of us had In N Out before so this was a BIG freaking deal. They are so gluten free friendly I am absolutely obsessed. I got my burger "animal style" of course and I don't think I've ever eaten a burger to quickly in my entire life. So good. Next time I fly to the West Coast it might just be to go to In N Out..... just saying. I finally understand all of the hype. Our Air B&B was in a perfect location in West Hollywood, walkable to The Grove. It was so cute and had everything that we needed for such a good price. Matt and I took a serious nap that we really needed thanks to the time difference and were ready to take on the town. We got all LA ready (photo above) rocking my Stassi inspired look. Our reservations weren't until 8:45pm so we figured we would stop at this wine bar down the road that I saw had gluten free avocado toast. There will be a whole separate post on this goodness within the next few days so stay tuned. I have to say it was probably the BEST avocado toast I have ever tasted in my life. SUR was and everything I thought it would be. Very Lisa Vanderpump. A lot going on. And, yes I did go to the famous bathroom where everyone cries. We met DJ James Kennedy... the legend himself, and his girlfriend... and his roommate. He is a reality TV gem and let me tell you he is just as out of control in person. I will leave it at that. His roommate bought me a drink and told me I looked like Stassi so uh life freaking made. I made sure to obnoxiously mention this to Matt for the rest of our trip and tell him that people will probably start asking for my autograph soon. Being delusional and optimistic works for me. Lisa's son, Max, was our server and really killed it. He was very knowledgable about gluten free dishes which made me like him even more. The food was, to my surprise, actually really great. I got the lobster bisque and the seafood risotto. The signature drinks were a bit too sweet for me to I switched to my usual Tito's and soda water but they had a great fruit selection so I had them add some raspberries. Now that's my new thing. After SUR, we went to Pump and it was everything you would ever dream of Pump being. Lots of scantily clothed attractive gay men, a lot of pink, and a lot of over the top everything. It was great. We didn't stay out too long because we were pretty jet lagged and had a big day the next day but I accomplished my goal and finally made it to SUR! Plus side, Matt also enjoyed himself. We made a game time decision on Saturday to do a super touristy celebrity home tour which actually ended up to be awesome even if it was a little corny. Beforehand we went to brunch at The Guild in West Hollywood. We hadn't heard of it before, we just kind of stumbled upon it but it was absolutely amazing. The decor was so on point and the owner actually hung out with us for a while and explained his design decisions. He made all of the beautiful reclaimed wood tables in the whole restaurant. I got some herbal tea, bottomless mimosas, and duck confit nachos. SO. GOOD. If you are in WeHo I totally recommend you go here. You can sit outside and enjoy good weather and the service and food are so spot on. After our delicious brunch experience we made our way over to our tour and spent the afternoon cruising around WeHo and Beverly Hills. I'm usually not into really touristy things but I am happy we did this tour. It was an easy was to see everything from celebrity houses to the Hollywood sign, without having to rent a car or get lost. It was nice just to enjoy the beautiful day and the sights with Matt worry free. That night we were supposed to go the The Parlour which I was super excited for but I just did not feel well. A lot of times my first few days of vacation for me are rough with the different foods, sleep schedules, and just changes in general. I wanted to really feel great by time we got to Hawaii so we had an early night and just got to enjoy time together watching movies. I felt a little lame that we were doing exactly what we would be doing at home on vacation but it was actually great because at home we have a million other things going on so we never get to just actually, really chill. Overall, LA was amazing. There are so many more details that I probably could have done seven different posts about but I won't bore ya'll with that. I can't wait to make my way back to LA for a bit more time.... that trip will be hopefully coming sooner rather than later! We both loved it. PART TWO: MAUI, HAWAIIOur flight from LAX to Maui was on Virgin Airlines which I had never flown before but I was definitely blown away. Their customer service and their branding are so on point. They also really won me over with the cheese plate that came with gluten free crackers. I spent our flight devouring cheese and reading Andy Cohen's new book. Needless to say it was a very enjoyable flight. I'm a sucker for cheese plates and Andy Cohen. Once we got to Maui we got a cab from the airport to the other side of the island. The ride to our resort was absolutely beautiful. Looking at the coastline made me feel like I wasn't even in the real world. Matt and I were so blown away. We made it to the Kaanapali Beach Club where we were staying and immediately got some pina coladas and hit the pool. We explored the resort, checked our our suite which was insane (shout out to my mom for seriously hooking it up for us!), and we grabbed some groceries for the week from across the street. By time we were all settled in my mom and her boyfriend had made it to the resort so we all had dinner and got our leis! Our whole week was an absolute whirlwind of fun but we still found pockets of time just to relax and take in our surroundings. I got to spend quality time with not only Matt but also my mom who just moved back from Rome. I got to do a ton of blog planning and read a few great books. I was completely wowed by the amount of cool things that we got to do and the places that we were able to go. I tried to really be present and in the moment with a lot of this things that we were experiencing so I wasn't on my phone documenting 24/7. I compiled the highlights of where we went and what we did though! We went on a beautiful dinner cruise out of Lahaina and watched the sunset on the water. The night was complete with some baby whales making an appearance right next to our boat. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect and romantic night. My mom treated us to a mouth watering dinner at one of her favorite spots on Maui, Duke's! I got the seafood risotto which was loaded with fresh lobster, shrimp, and scallops. Partnered with a chilled glass of Pinot and I could not have been happier. I got to live out my Playboy Mansion fantasies, kidding, or maybe not. The pool at our club had the coolest grotto that we spent time relaxing in. Between the pool, the grotto, the beach view, and the poolside bar, I probably could have stayed and just hung out at the club for a full week. We found this hole in the wall Mexican place that was walking distance from our club. They had the best fresh margaritas, ceviche, and fish tacos. Needless to say, we were there a lot throughout our stay. Matt, my mom, and I went on a day trip on the Road to Hana. It was honestly one of the coolest experiences of my life. The views were unbelievable and we had the chance to really experience the Hawaiian culture. This tour really put into perspective for me how so much of the island really does live off of the land. They have true respect for nature and appreciation for the land that provides for them. We had the opportunity to do a lot of hiking and explore everything from red beaches, to black beaches, to ocean caves, and the Seven Pools. It was a long day but worth all of the bumpy roads. Even though we were busy adventuring, we did have time to explore the town of Lahaina and relax on the beach right outside of our club for a bit. Even just relaxing by the beach you have a view of dolphins hopping out of the ocean and whales breaching. For someone who is obsessed with marine life, these views were an absolute dream. While we were at the club I also had the opportunity to do yoga right next to the water which was definitely a bucket list experience. I also went with my mom to some great water fitness classes. In Hawaii it seems that everyone at the resorts and clubs are so focused on wellness which I love. It also made it easy to eat pretty healthy because everything is so fresh. I had these super fresh fish tacos at Pacific O's in Lahaina and was so in love. If you know me, you know I am constantly on a mission to find the best fish tacos and I think these may be topping my list at the moment. Matt became obsessed with ceviche on this trip which he had never had any interest in before. He may be disappointed when he tries to get it here in Maryland... not the same! Pacific O's also had kombucha on tap which I was kind overly excited for but it was amazing so clearly I deserved to be. I'm going to be doing a whole post on kombucha. There actually was someone on site at our club that taught us how to make kombucha. It's big in Hawaii and its big with me. Match mad in heaven. Our last big event was also one of the coolest things I've ever done. We went snorkeling on the coast of Molokini and Lanai. We started off our journey pretty early in the morning so we saw a ton of mother and baby whales breaching as we made our way out to the snorkel spots. The sunrise on the water was absolutely beautiful, I literally felt like I was in a different world. The first snorkel spot was home to a lot of interesting fish and some resident sea turtles which we got to get on camera (thanks GoPro!). The second spot was my favorite. It was an abandoned sunken bridge that is now home to a variety of different fish as well as turtles and even some sharks. My dream has been to swim with sharks and even thought these were just some reef sharks not a Great White it got me a bit closer to my goal. Being out in the water is one of my favorite things because there is always a bit of unknown when you jump off of the boat into the ocean. You never know what you are going to see so there is constantly adrenaline pumping.
This trip to Maui was a once in a lifetime experience that I am so thankful for. If you have the chance, definitely try and visit because it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, the locals are so incredibly friendly and helpful, and the nature experience you can have in Maui are beyond what you could ever imagine. If you have any questions or want any more details about our trip feel free to comment or email me!

We're finally moved in!Yes... finally. After pulling the trigger on our home sweet home decision, making all of the selections and updates we needed to, and days of packing and moving we finally have everything in the house. Now, incase you haven't been keeping up, we also had a casual 10 day trip in the middle of moving which ended up prolonging our move but being totally worth every second (recap to come). The stress of traveling, moving, and starting a new position has caused my Crohn's to be all over the place but it seems that things are sort of evening out a bit. Now it is time for the fun part; decorating, organizing, and then having my family and friends over to share the awesomeness. There may also be a blog post... if you all are interested.I cannot wait to relax in my new home and I am even more excited that it is the hub of all of the big things that Matt and I have planned for the future. Finally having a place that we can call our own is not only so very empowering but also comforting. The process was a long one but we are thankful that things turned out the way it did.
Hopefully you guys have bared with me while I have went through these transitions and haven't been updating as much as usual. In these cases always feel free to follow me on Instagram (@mschienle_) where I do short updates a couple of times per week. Now things should be pretty much back in full force though. In honor of that I wanted to tease a few exciting posts that will be coming up within the next few weeks so you all know there is some great content to look forward to. What you have to look forward to:
Please let me know if there is anything else that you want to hear about and I will make sure to address it soon on Crohnically Blonde! As always, thank you for the support and thank you for the patience. This blog, like everything else good in life, is a process, and I appreciate you joining me on my journey. xx DRINK AND ENJOY IT!Not going to lie. Things over at the Crohnically Blonde camp have been pretty great! Stressful... but great! I am trying to let every second of it sink in and manage my stress with a whole lot of bubble baths and maybe some Xanax here and there. As my fellow IBD sufferers know, as soon as anything exciting or stressful hits your life, 9/10 times you are also hit with a flare up of epic proportions. Lucky, lucky me. But like I said, I am remaining extremely positive and trying to enjoy all of the goodness that has been happening. I'll give ya'll a quick update since it has been a little while. I do have to apologize, my posts have been less regular through the holidays but that is to be expected considering the busy nature of the holiday season. Things are going to pick up in the New Year with so much goodness. I dedicated IBD Awareness Week to making some big plans and setting some up and coming stuff into motion. I am BEYOND excited. First things first.... Matt and I have been working away trying to finalize everything about the house. From furniture planning, to paint color selections, to making sure our closing will happen on time. Things have been absolutely crazy but I wouldn't have it any other way. It will be so rewarding when we have everything in place and we can get our little family unit all moved in! As far as Christmas goes, Matt was getting over a stomach virus (one that I've already had twice in one month, thank you immunosuppressants....) and I had a bad cold. That being said, we spent the entire day in our pajamas with our families and watching movies. Despite both of us being sick, it ended up being one of the best days we have had in a while.
In the last of my big and exciting news for today....I DID feel good enough, despite my many illnesses recently, to get a little dolled up and attend my company's Christmas party. It is a good thing I did because my boss surprised me and promoted me right there on the spot in front of everyone! Again, I won't go into a ton of details about my job because I keep that stuff pretty personal but I can say that this position is helping me get back closer to my creative roots and dive into even more of what I love. So there you have it.....Moving, amazing Christmas with the family, and a promotion. On top of that some great new stuff coming up for the blog and hopefully some new changes in my health (I will be updating that post next week's doctor's appointment). I promise to keep you all updated and I am looking forward to hearing back from you all! How was your holiday season? How do you hold up during stressful times and changes with your IBD/chronic illness?
Drop a comment or an email and give me the scoop. xx Hello my Crohnie friends! I hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving and got to enjoy it with your friends and family with a lot of delicious food that didn't cause you any tummy issues. My holiday definitely was great and brought A LOT to be thankful for... when it rains it pours, right?! That being said, that is why my posts have been a little sporadic lately. In this post I am going to update ya'll on what has been going on in my life and set the intention for the upcoming plans in the Crohnically Blonde Camp. Basically, like I mentioned before, when it rains it pours, and the end of 2016 has put a lot of goodness on my plate. For the remainder of the year I will be playing around with different types of posts, different segments, post frequency, etc. to see what sticks and then come 2017 I will hopefully get some feedback from my followers and get going in full force with the best of the best. I wanted to wait to start this thing until it was absolutely perfect and I was ready to throw everything into it but would the timing have ever have been right? Plus I am rather enjoying the evolution of this pretty little thing. Anyway, comments and suggestions about upcoming content will be greatly appreciated! My number one goal for the new year is to provide all of the realness and quality content that you guys actually care about. So back to what has been going on.... GETTING PERSONAL.Matt and I are buying a house! Yup... you heard it here first! We are making the big step into adulthood and purchasing a home, woo! That being said, the home buying process comes with a whole lot of stress, paperwork, and playing the waiting game. It also comes with a whole lot of planning and lists when you are an OCD queen like myself. So if I have seemed a little preoccupied it is because I totally am. We are so excited to get our home up and running as our first real space of just our own. I am also super pumped to create a space that is conducive to me dreams and schemes and fun little creative projects I have in store. The physical home of Crohnically Blonde is being born! As of buying a home isn't enough of an undertaking, I have been preparing to interview for a promotion at my company. I won't say too much about this because I like to keep stuff like that very personal but I definitely have been throwing a majority of energy that way as well. WHAT ABOUT THANKSGIVING?My Thanksgiving and time around it was absolutely great and much needed. I got a chance to spend quality time with my family as well as some pre Thanksgiving time with Matt's family as well. We had a full gluten free feast at my parent's house which was SO FREAKING DELICIOUS. So delicious that I dug in before I had the chance to even think about taking pictures of it for the blog (whoops)..... My mom sent over some gorgeous blooms for me to enjoy with a sweet note which I appreciated to much. I miss her so incredibly much and am counting down the days until she gets back from overseas where she is living at the moment. Shoutout to her though for still bringing all of the holiday feels to my home from all the way across the world. I would have to say that one of my all time favorite things that I got to do was just hang out with my boys. We honestly have the best time just hanging out and doing the silliest things. I know it makes us sound old and boring but Matt and I love playing board games together, and the pups like to crash them. They are just too funny and our weekends together never disappoint. SO WHAT ABOUT YOUR HEALTH?Oh that... So as ya'll know. With stress comes Crohn's probs. I have had a super obnoxiously long flare up that has been seriously effecting my day to day life but I just have to keep things going and push on through. I have another appointment with my gastro this Friday for my Cimzia shots and to discuss what the heck to do. For about a month now I have been on Apriso in addition to Cimzia but noticed no real difference. I know it has only been a little so I am going to try and stick it out but there have been talks of some other options. Cimzia may have run its course on me. It started out working for about 3.5 weeks out of the 4 week period and then it went down to 3 then 2.5 and now 2. It is definitely wearing on me. My doctor has suggested potentially switching to Remicade because he would like to see me go into clinical remission in no more than six months. That seems totally out of reach thinking about how I have been feeling but I am trying to stay positive. The thing that people don't realize is that Crohn's symptoms are so much more than just the assumed GI issues. Between the body aches, fatigue, brain fogs, and everything else there is so much more that I wish could be done! I am trusting the process and doing my due diligence in researching and acting on any natural healing practices that can assist in my treatment. Worst comes to worse we would have to consider some type of surgical action but I would really like to avoid getting to that point.
All and all I am trying to stay super positive! I want to end this update on an amazingly happy note! As my fellow Crohnies know, your illness will always have to be some kind of part of your life and it is an ever evolving journey. I am so happy and so thankful for all of the beautiful opportunities that are being brought into my life right now and I can't wait to continue to share everything with you all. I don't know what I did to manifest this overwhelming movement towards change but I think I like it! xx Happy Halloween everyone! This is my absolute FAVORITE holiday, mainly because I am obsessed with weird haunted things and I feel like Halloween is the official initiation of holiday season. This year Matt and I have been celebrating in a freaky zombie style kind of way full of a lot of costume makeup and scary movies. Yesterday we kicked things off with a super last minute costume (thank you years of working at ULTA for providing me with ample makeup options!) which I have to say I think we pulled off pretty well. Not sure if ya'll care about makeup details but I can share if you are interested, just contact me! It's funny how I haven't done professional style makeup in so long but when I do it all comes back and remember how much I love and miss it! Anyway, we started off the night at our friend's party and ending things at our house with horror movies and gluten free pizza. My ideal evening for sure! Today (actual Halloween) we are keeping things low key and heading over to my parents' house to hand out candy and show off our puppies' costumes (there will be updates on those later, I can't wait to share, they are SO FUNNY). Whenever I am handing out candy I usually steal a good 10 pieces to keep my blood sugar from getting low of course (I love excuses....). Halloween can be a COMPLETE TRAP for those of us avoiding gluten because, lets face it, who really knows there is gluten in things like Twizzlers unless you are doing ample research?! Today during my grocery shopping, shout out to Wegmans, I came across Simply Gluten Free magazine and fell in love. A whole post will come about this later I promise, but I came across an article about safe gluten free candy and I couldn't help but to share. To me it seems easy to determine what to eat and what not to eat. Number one, because I don't really eat candy and number two, the candy I eat is stuff that I know and buy, not things that are randomly given out to me. While reading this article I realized that one day when I have kids they most likely will have to be gluten free just like their mama to reduce the effects of these yucky medical issues brought on by genetics. How would I know what candy has gluten or doesn't unless I did ample research beforehand or better yet, had a guide to the good guys and bad guys? Well, now I am informed and I have this trusty little list to help. I've included a link HERE to this super helpful guide that lists things out plain and simple. Now I know that I can dig into our cauldron of treats with confidence about what I am putting into my body. Halloween is A LOT more fun when you aren't sick from enjoying it!
Let's just say, this evening I will definitely be enjoying some Angry Orchard ciders and a few candy bars.... I can't wait to hear about what you all did for Halloween! What did you dress up as? What is your favorite gluten free candy? Or what struggles have you ran into being gluten free during Halloween? Anything you have feel free to share via comments or email. Thank you again for all of the continuing support! That makes blogging just that much more fun! I wish I was lying when I tell ya'll I get SO MUCH SHIT from about 85% of the people in my life for being what I like to call an extroverted introvert and wanting to spend my free time preferably curled up in my bed with my perfect pooches, carry out Mexican food, Netflix, and a glass of wine. That is how I recharge #judgeme. Doing what makes you feel revitalized and ready to take on the world is a lot more important than doing what everyone else thinks you should be doing. When my Crohn's got bad I started to realize that I could spend my good days doing what other people wanted and being miserable or spend my good days enjoying what I like. As a person who loves approval of those around me, it is an uphill battle but I am slowly feeling more and more comfortable opting for the wine, puppies, tacos, chill. And clearly a lot of other people feel me on that considering this is one of Coffee In The Shower's top selling sweatshirts. Join me in my extroverted introvert revolution and order one of these ASAP (LINK HERE). They are also insanely soft and baggy so it's like a Snuggie you can wear to take your dogs out to pee without your neighbors ridiculing you for eternity. Enjoy xo Anyone who knows me, knows how obsessively in love I am with my sweet puppy Charleston. Well, our little guy just turned one and right when we were getting out of the crazy puppy phase and things were calming down we decided to shake things up again.
Thank God Matt puts up with my on a whim decisions because I fell in love with a sweet little puppy's story and all of a sudden, Charleston has a new puppy brother. I wrote about Caleb (now Rhaegar)'s story for a little special something hopefully coming later but I wanted to share it with you guys. Oh... and the whole reason I had such a connection with this little guy... he has tummy problems just like his new mama! "Rhaegar (formerly Caleb) came to PAWS rescue with his litter and was a shy little guy looking for a loving home. He was supposed to be the first puppy who was adopted. The night before his adoption he got very sick and ended up having to get emergency surgery to get three feet of his intestines removed. Like any major surgery the cost was astronomical and the home care would be intense. For a while they weren't sure if our sweet little guy was going to make it. PAWS started a fundraiser to cover the costs associated with his medical care. Matt and I followed Rhaegar's story through the PAWS Facebook page and were so in love with him without even meeting him. I obsessively checked to see how he was doing and was convinced that this puppy was meant to be ours! We were toying around with the idea of adopting a brother for our dog Charleston so when we saw that Rhaegar was starting to do better and needed a foster/forever home I immediately emailed PAWS. I explained that no matter what he needed as far as his health we could make happen. Matt is a nurse and I have Crohn's disease so neither of us are strangers to tummy problems, special diets, and medical appointments. I, then, obsessively checked my email until I heard back that we were approved for this special little pup. The minute we arrived at PAWS to get him, Rhaegar was so excited to meet us and Charleston was so excited to meet him! Rhaegar is full of love and kisses and I couldn't wait to give him the most beautiful life full of love. We've only had Rhaegar for a week now but he has changed our lives already. We are so thankful to have him in our lives and he has been a great little brother for Charleston. What really impacted me about the whole situation is the love and community surrounding PAWS. If it weren't for Katie and her team raising money, syringe feeding, going back and forth to vet appointments, and nursing Rhaegar back to health he would not be here today. With so many other puppies to tend to, PAWS could have given up on this little guy. The thousand and some dollars that was fundraised brought me to tears because I saw how many people in the community really care and support PAWS and their efforts. Rhaegar's story changed our lives and gave us a renewed belief in the good of humanity. We are so blessed to be able to provide this special little guy with a loving home full of snuggles, healthy treats, and playtime. We are able to do this because of PAWS." It may seem a little cliche for a first post... but here I am! I used to have a beauty blog a couple of years ago that I put all of my blood, sweat, and tears into. This was all amazing until I reached a point where I was finishing college and needed to put my blood, sweat, and tears into establishing an adult life for myself. Well.... now I am 24 years old, just moved back to the suburbs. I have an amazing boyfriend and a perfect little puppy. I am working as an IT recruiter for a company that I love and I am finally at a balanced point in my life where I have time for "me" again. This is what I am choosing to do again as my hobby per say. Why blogging? Why crohnically blonde? During the past two years on my blogging haiutus, I not only acquired all of these great, new life milestones I also discovered that I have Crohn's Disease. While this isn't something that I want to say defines me, it honestly does. It is something that very strongly effects how I live my life, my day to day activities, my relationships, my work, basically everything. From when I was first diagnosed with Crohn's I relied on social media and bloggers to learn about their experiences and feel a lot more normal. From their tips, tricks, and inspirations I realized that if I were to start a blog again, I wanted to give back the way that the online chronic illness community has done for me. And the blonde part... paying tribute to my beauty blogging roots of course. And honestly, the name came from watching Legally Blonde after about three glasses of Sauv Blanc. This blog isn't only about Crohn's disease, it's going to be about my life. My day to day. Things I like. Things I don't like. My reality TV rants. My Nordstrom shopping binges. My beauty product reviews. Venting about things that my boyfriend is so tired of hearing for the 7,000th time. The purpose of this blog is to share my story and my opinions and be part of the online community of people that I have so much been a silent part of in the past. After I get a few posts down I will open up either and email or a forum for questions which I will answer. I know that this first post leaves a lot to be desired as far as back story on just about everything but stay tuned because I promise it will come. In the mean time, feel free to check out my old blog itsalwaysbrunchhere.wordpress.com/ to get a feel for where this all started. This is my new chapter, full of adventures and opinions. Enjoy! |
